About SoEPI

A repeating flat illustrated pattern of different people

Approach

We approach our work:

  • Using expertise from disciplines, such as social epidemiology, statistics applied to health, school health, nutrition, and theoretical frameworks including the socioecological framework and the social production of disease which acknowledge factors at multiple levels influence the health of the people.
  • Devoting attention to the potential causes of and solutions to disparities in health by ethnicity, social class, gender, birthplace, immigration, or sexual orientation identities, and their combination.
  • Assessing and monitoring disparities, and evaluating the impact of policies and interventions on people’s health and related disparities.
  • Applying multi-level, systems thinking, diverse methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative approaches, and using multiple datasets at different levels of influence (e.g., individual, schools, communities) and/or collecting new data.
  • Listening to a plurality of voices and sharing our research findings with a broad range of people, including community members, students, scientists, public health program participants, and policy makers.
