Biography

Specialization:  Community-based participatory research and health inequities

Juliana van Olphen is currently serving as Chair of the Department of Public Health. She has led and collaborated on a number of projects adopting a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach and has designed and implemented trainings and evaluations of CBPR projects. Her research and evaluation have focused on religious involvement as a buffer against stress, the health impacts of incarceration, particularly among women of color, feminist and reproductive justice, and violence prevention. She served as Director of Writing Across the Curriculum at the university for 6.5 years (2016 – 2022) and helped to develop an online curriculum for faculty teaching writing across the university -  Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Writing Pedagogies of Inclusive Excellence (PIE). Her work in this role and in her current role as department chair focus on pedagogies and strategies to enhance student success, particularly among underrepresented students.
