Applied Practice Experience (APE)

Students will be individually partnered with a governmental, non-governmental, non-profit, industrial, and for-profit settings or appropriate university-affiliated settings, producing two professional products by the end of the semester.

 

Step 1: 

Students will familiarize themselves with APE timeline, requirements and MPH handbook.

Step 2:

In semester 1, student will schedule an appointment with their faculty advisor and follow the timeline. Complete the Brainstorm worksheet with their advisor by the end of semester 1 and register for PH 821.

Step 3:

In semester 2, attend an APE workshop held the department’s applied practice coordinator (APC) and identify your competencies and products/deliverables with their advisor. 

Students will begin their Learning Agreement Form with their faculty advisor to begin matching their competencies to their products/deliverables.

  • For students that are interested in optional summer internships, meet with your APC by mid-March to finalize placement site agreements and approval.

  • For students interested in completing an IRB product, please meet with your advisor ASAP to complete IRB registration steps.

Step 4:

In semester 3, students will begin their PH 821 course and start their internship. Course instructor, advisor and preceptor will guide students in development of deliverables demonstrating competencies. Student, with feedback, finalizes two deliverables for their organization. Students and preceptor(s) will complete an evaluation form and advisors will support revisions on final deliverables based on the APE rubric assessment.
