Juliana van Olphen, PhD, MPH, is the Director of Writing Across the Curriculum/Writing in the Discipline (WAC/WID) at San Francisco State University, supporting faculty in learning about and applying best practices for teaching writing. She has almost 30 years experience in community-based participatory research (CBPR), community health assessment, program design, implementation and evaluation. Her work has focused on reproductive justice, the public health impacts of incarceration, training in participatory research and research justice approaches for community-academic teams, and, most recently, the evaluation of a gang violence prevention program for middle school youth. She is deeply committed to social justice pedagogy and to research on inclusive teaching and learning strategies. She teaches courses in the undergraduate program in the Department of Public Health and advises students in the Master's in Public Health (MPH) program.
