Sanchez-Vaznaugh appointed to NIH study section

"Emma Sanchez-Vaznaugh, professor in the Department of Health Education, has been appointed to serve as a member of the Mentored Clinical and Basic Science Review Committee (MCBS) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

The MCBS advises the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Advisory Council, the NHLBI and the NIH director, and has the primary responsibility for providing the initial review of applications that provide support for mentored research career development of heart, lung, blood, and sleep research scientists.

The NIH selects scientists to serve in review panels on the basis of several factors, including the scientist’s experience in peer-reviewed research, successfully competing for peer-reviewed grants, publishing in peer reviewed journals and presenting at research symposia and workshops.

“I am honored to serve as standing member in this panel and am excited about the opportunity to contribute to the mission of the NIH,” said Sanchez-Vaznaugh.

The NIH’s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life and reduce illness and disability.

The committee meets approximately three times per year in Bethesda, Maryland. Sanchez-Vaznaugh will serve on the study section for a two-year term, beginning November 2019 and continuing through June 30, 2021. She is principal investigator on a five-year project funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute that examines policy and environmental influences on racial/ethnic childhood obesity disparities."
