"Assistant Professor of Health Education David Rebanal co-authored a paper with Meredith Minkler of UC Berkeley, along with MPH alumus Maria Acosta (MPH '18). The paper, titled “Growing Equity and Health Equity in Perilous Times: Lessons From Community Organizers,” was published in the September 24, 2019 issue of Health Education and Behavior. The authors share the experiences and reflections of approximately 140 grassroots organizers across the United States, largely in the organizers’ own words. All of the organizers attended regional meetings in 2017 planned and run by four leading community capacity- and base-building organizations, where diverse organizers shared strategies that work, challenges faced, and the deep concerns among their already often disenfranchised communities in the contemporary sociopolitical and cultural context.

Results of this work helped to inform the creation of a new funding initiative aimed at building political power in local communities to improve community health and equity."
