MPH students contribute to analysis of public health impacts of gentrification and housing displacement

"In Fall 2018, Health Equity Institute Professor of Health Education Laura Mamo continued a class partnership with the Anti-Eviction Mapping Project (AEMP) — a data-visualization, data analysis and storytelling collective — to contribute to AEMP’s analysis of the public health implications of gentrification and housing displacement in the Bay Area. Master of Public Health students enrolled in “Public Health Inquiry” were guided by three newly minted MPH alums, Maria Elena Acosta, Adrienne Hall and Maureen Rees (MPH '18), now representing AEMP as volunteers following their 2016 coursework.

MPH students worked with the AEMP team to transcribe and analyze oral histories of displacement. With course-learning focused on research design and hands-on analysis, and with a critical public health, anti-racist, feminist, and decolonial lens, MPH students provided a political economy of health and gentrification in the Bay Area analysis as told through stories of eviction. A professional report of findings was submitted to AEMP, and the leadership MPH alums designed a visual summary of findings. The net result was MPH students and alumni making a difference to AEMP’s capacity to document the myriad impacts of gentrification and displacement in the Bay Area.
