MPH alum, Health Ed lecturer, shares personal experience in support of Filipinx youth program

"Health Education Lecturer Ruby N. Turalba (MPH, ’06) began her doctoral studies in Educational Leadership at SF State this fall. Her research interests include cultural responsive pedagogy and positive identity development as forms of resistance to colonization and white supremacy culture.

On October 15, approximately 50 community members — including youth, families and educators — attended the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education meeting to express their support for Galing Bata (“quality child”), a culturally and linguistically responsive program that has been serving Filipinx youth for almost two decades and has faced recent budget and programmatic cuts.

Turalba shared her own personal challenges growing up as a child of immigrants, as well as not having culturally relatable teachers and staff or having curriculum that valued Filipinx language and history — a testimony that speaks to the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy that values equity, justice and centers the lives of students. (Ruby Turalba, middle row, second from left)"
